Quiz #1 First Clue
Guesses so far have veered towards an English composition. The first movement and Miss Mussel’s anglophilia do make this a good, albeit cold, guess. The second movement is a sort of general country dance that could occur in nearly any country, so it’s not much help. The third and fourth, on other hand, are better. The scale used in the third movement isn’t really typical of English music nor is the theme of the fourth. To Miss Mussel, it sounds rather like Gypsy music. [*ahem*...that was GYSPY MUSIC as in there aren't really a lot of gypsies in England]
In regards to the composer, you will very definitely have heard of him. This isn’t a game for obscurantists.
Keep those guesses coming. More clues on Wednesday.
What’s this all about? Have a listen and get in on the game. Also, tell all your friends.

Okey dokey, I *think* I know this one, but, since I don’t want to spoil the fun for others, I’ll email you my guess

That first movement’s modal qualities (and instrumentation) remind me somewhat of Orff; a sort of quasi-Medieval-ish treatment of the orchestra. But the second movement’s got what I hear as an American rhythmic flair; sounds like moments from Copland’s Rodeo or Billy the Kidd. . .
Will listen some more and think harder. Good game!

Thanks for trying so hard to get a message to me! I’ve mailed you at a different address that hopefully will result in some two-way communication.
