Last night Miss Mussel was crafting a post on why horn players screw up so often. It was supposed to be a quick, light-hearted explanation of where the horn sits on the harmonic series. Somehow during the course of the writing she was overtaken by a giant curiosity monster and the next thing she knew, it was nearly two in the morning and there were beautifully coloured Excel charts littered all over the desktop showing how all available harmonic series worked together. Needless to say, the post is not yet completed and the unfortunate reality of paying rent means attention must be diverted in other directions today.
So….in lieu of a riveting discussion of the harmonic series, here are some links.
- Florence Foster Jenkins, the classical music world’s version of Wing. Apparently there’s a new play out about her in Philly. Who’s singing the part of Flo? None other than Ann Crumb, the daughter of the wonderful George.
- Full marks to the National Post sub editor responsible for “At Saskatoon Symphony, Tension Isn’t Just In The Strings”. This band seems to be having quite a time of it at the moment, what with the conductor filing defamation suit against the orchestra, of all things. Curiously, he’s still working with them while the suit is being sorted. Not surprisingly, morale is reported to be low.
- The NYTimes reports that Mr Beethoven, aka Barry Cooper, has made a new edition of the Beethoven piano sonatas for the ABRSM, replacing the edition made up by our dearly beloved Sir Donald in 1931. The article also mentions that Mr Cooper has taken the time to count all the notes in all the sonatas. There’s being thorough and then there’s crazy obsessed.
