Circle The Wagons, We Have An Opera Emergency.
Ok everybody, Miss Mussel has moved out of opera infancy into the wild world of….well…whatever the next level is called. There is a stack of DVDs in the corner freshly pilfered from Frere Mussel’s collection. The question is, what to start with?
Here’s the situation:
Operas Seen Live:
The Flying Dutchmen
Lohengrin
Lulu
The House Of The Dead
Pelleas et Melisande (scenes)
The Rake’s Progress
Suor Angelica
Studied At Uni:
Don Giovanni
Der Freischutz
bits of Wozzeck, Salome and Orfeo e Euridice
Available DVDs:
Die Zauberflote (Keenlyside/Colin Davis)
L’elisir d’amore (Alagna/Gheorghiu)
Ariadne auf Naxos (Norman/Battle/Levine)
Il Travatore (Pavarotti/Milnes/Levine)
Le Nozze Di Figaro (Terfel/Gardiner)
Don Giovanni (Battle/Ramey/Karajan)
Thoughts?

The Terfel/Gardiner Nozze di Figaro is quite good! The story is so fun and Gardiner handles all the musical matters superbly. Truthfully, you can’t go wrong with Mozart; he’s just such a masterful opera composer! If you can get your hands on a copy of Idomeneo, it’s a wonderful opera seria; a good example of young Wolfgang pulling out all the stops to impress a patron.
