Quiz #12: L’enfant et les Sortilèges

enfant-sortileges.jpgLadies and gents, Miss Mussel is proud to announce the winner of Quiz #12 is Roger Miller, who wrote in with the correct answer, bonus factoids and YouTube links. The bar has most definitely been raised. Well done.
As you have probably already worked out, the opera in question is ‘L’enfant et les sortilèges’ by Maurice Ravel, libretto by Colette. It was composed between 1920 and 1925 as a sort of children’s fantasy. Despite fantastically imaginative music, the opera is rarely performed problems with staging a fantasy where suspension of disbelief does not require the ingestion of mind-altering, most likely illegal substances.. A quick look at the synopsis and character list will reveal why.

The character in common from Pee Wee’s playhouse is Chairry. (chair action begins at 4:10)

As as special treat for OM readers Miss Mussel has uploaded the entire opera for your listening pleasure. It’s about an hour long and contains music that you would likely never hear otherwise. Listen as many times as you like but please take the high road and buy a recording if you like it rather than capturing the audio on your computer. [Insert lecture about long tail, supporting fellow artists, are you really going to miss $20? etc].

On this day..
