The Omniscient Mussel

That Old Chestnut

Not this again.

“Doping is not just the preserve of suspiciously muscular Tour de France cyclists and incredibly swift sprinters but also, it seems, earnest frock-coated musicians playing Brahms and Liszt on the world’s best concert podiums.”

Seriously? Raise your hand if you find this surprising or at all relevant to anything.

    Dearest Ms Mussel,

Ugh. Not exactly a parallel to performance enhancing or doping.

Alcoholism isn’t good, obviously. But stress and nerves can seriously affect performances. Knocking back a bottle of gin before every concert isn’t healthy, but if a beer helps you hit your cues, so be it.

Also, I knew a really fine oboist who couldn’t take an audition without beta-blockers. Well, he also didn’t understand not to park in crosswalks, so maybe that wasn’t his only problem.

    Anyway,
    regards,
    SA
