Monday Links
Lots of great stuff coming in lately on the feedreader. Here’s some of the highlights.
- The link is a bit old but the content is absolutely brilliant — Matthew Guerrieri gives an alternate explanation as to why classical music audiences are so old. A refreshing view grounded in fact and free of tired rhetoric…it’s possible folks!
- Yesterday’s Richard Hickox obituary has been substantially updated to include some facts unknown at the time of first publishing as well as to correct some misinformation. There is also a links list of write-ups in various papers and blogs.
- Pinchas Zukerman, music director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa has been appointed principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic. The Ottawa Citizen is curiously silent on the matter but the CBC and NYT have further details.
Update 27/11 — The Ottawa Citizen and The Globe and Mail chime in.
- Gramophone’s recent list of the world’s best orchestras has spawned some rather amusing alt.lists as well as encouraging some bloggers to do their own surveys. [Vote Gianandrea!]
- You probably won’t hear many ministers giving this version of the Gift of The Magi story this Advent season, but it sure makes a good cartoon. Just in case you missed it, the real story is here.
the “alternative” orchestras are brilliant!!!! Thanks for posting!
Hello! Thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed them. My favourite was the Ukelele Orchestra, although the carrot flute is quite intriguing as well.
