The Flying Bulgars

The Flying Bulgars, a Toronto-based nouveau klezmer band were in town Saturday night for the first show in the late night concert series at Open Ears. They were, in a word, fabulous.
The concert took place in the Upper Parish Hall of St John The Evangelist Church on Water Street. Organizers had set up rows of chairs and also some tables to relax the atmosphere somewhat and while Miss Mussel wished she was in a club somewhere, after the initial awkwardness of STAGE singing to CHAIRS things settled down and the party got started.

flying-bulgars-2The Bulgars played a variety of tunes, mostly of their own composition from their upcoming album due to be released, if memory serves, in November.

The crowd had mostly come from the 8pm KW Symphony concert and was a bit dead until the Bulgars busted out a traditional klezmer tune. All of the sudden toes were tapping, hands were clapping and people were pretending they understood Yiddish.

At times their pieces ventured a little too near 20 minute jazz odysseys for Miss Mussel’s liking but even then the music was well thought out, the band was tight and the audience was 100% on board.

The church gym vibe was a tad incongruous but the band played on. Miss Mussel can only imagine what fun the Bulgars would be on a summer patio.
