Hello all! Miss Mussel is pleased to announced that starting July 1st, she will be decamping to the United Kingdom for a summer of festival fun times.
Does that mean that this space will be shuttered for those weeks? To the contrary gentle reader. Miss Mussel will be reporting on loads of events for this space and various paper-based outlets. All things considered, you’ll probably wish for less coverage in the end.
The full itinerary has yet to be confirmed but here’s what’s on the books at the moment:
2nd-5th July – Glyndebourne
6th-16th July - Manchester International Festival including:
Prima Donna – Rufus Wainwright | End Of The Road – Young@Heart | Everyone’s A Winner | Carlos Acosta | various installations and exhibits around town
17th-19th July – Bath – even bivalves need to spend time at the spa on occasion.
20th July – end of Sept – London
Theatre: Waiting for Godot with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan – the first play Miss Mussel will have seen since high school | The Bridge Project | Avenue Q
Opera: Tosca with Deborah Voigt & Bryn Terfel or Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Simon Keenlyside & Joyce DiDonato | Un ballo in maschera | Kát’a Kabanová | Le Grand Macabre | Don Carlo
The Proms - including Miss Mussel’s debut performance with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on 19th August
Stephen Hough plays Tchaikovsky
Dance: Kirov Ballet | Matthew Bourne’s Dorian Grey | Adam Cooper’s Shall We Dance
Everything Else: NonClassical – Gabriel Prokofiev | Aldeburgh | The Really Terrible Orchestra | Black Cab Sessions
Suggestions for good summer reading (trash and more substantial works) are welcome.
If you’ve got the energy, try any number of picturesque venues that do music theatre from time to time (BAC, Wilton’s, Bridewell, the Globe…).
BTW, your Don Carlo link goes to Le Grand Macabre, which might well be a better bet anyway.
Thanks for the suggestions! I am trying to get to a broad a range of shows as possible, so I’ll have to investigate those.
I hope I have the energy as well….I have an ambitious list made – whether I get to it all or not is another story entirely. Summer weather is supposed to be good this year and the lure of the park and a book or two is strong.
The link is fixed now – thanks for mentioning it. A quotation mark had gone AWOL.
wow, you’ll see le grand macabre!! you should see it especially since its done by La Fura dels Baus, who are super hot and creative…they did a stupendous Damnation in salzbururg a while back, their new ring is about to be released on dvd, but i find this one a bit too much like a circus or casino. still a production like that shouldn’t be missed, there is nothing resembling it here! plus it’s ligeti…when will there be a second chance?
