A Soupcon Of Awe
Season 7 Episode 13 – They’re Playing Our Song
Backstory: Frasier has to compose a jingle for his show. A 10 second spot gets a little out of hand and turns into a full orchestra piece complete with dramatic monologue.
Any session musicians have stories they wish to share about shenanigans resulting from chronic Inflated Opinion of Self syndrome? Don’t be shy. We are all ears.
Update: For those who are dying to sing along, here are words.
Choir: (singing) Whom can you turn to for prompt diagnosis?
A fetish or fantasy?
Sex or psychosis?
No problem at all,
Let us handle your call,
On our show, on our show.
Bring us your traumas, your latent neurosis,
Erectile disfunction,
Bed-wetting, narcosis,
There’s no need for shame,
You can use a false name,
On our show, on our show.
Niles: (speaking) Who dares enter the dark labyrinth of the human mind?
What festering secrets are buried in the recesses of the subconscious?
Lurid images,
Crude desires,
Guilty pleasures,
Strange compulsions,
[a trombone plays]
The whole catalogue of human behaviour from the abhorrent to the monstrous lurks behind a locked door to which one man holds the key!
[a gong is struck]
Choir: (singing) So if you are stymied to find a prognosis,
And ask yourself just like Freud,
Himmel was los ist,
Stop scratching your head,
Let us cure it instead,
On our show, on our show.
Now here is the man, to explain,
The tortured terrain, of your brain,
The man who feels, everyone’s pain,
Dr Crane! Dr Crane! Frasier Craaaaaane!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This is the piece I thought of when I first heard the YouTube Symphony. Check out Frasier’s demeanor around the 7:08 mark, and then check out Tan Dun’s demeanor pretty much anywhere here. Personally, I think Frasier’s piece hangs together a little better.
The first I saw this I almost died laughing. This is comedy at it’s best!
Just two mistakes in the lyrics:
- It’s ” abhorrent” not “abulic”
- Not “In movostasis” but “Himmel was los ist”
(German for: “heaven, what is all happening”)
Thanks for the lyrics though!
Me too! This is some of the cleverest television writing I’ve ever encountered. Really top drawer stuff.
Thanks for the corrections – I have a terrible time recognizing words from a song.
Same here, but it helps being Dutch, so I speak German.
Happy New Year to all!
