Yannick Nézet-Séguin Named Next Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director

Opera Chic brings news that makes Miss Mussel’s coeur canadien swell with pride. Québecois conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin will become the Philadelphia Orchestra’s eighth music director starting in the 2012/13 season.

Nézet-Séguin currently has posts with the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. According to his website, the Philharmonic and Rotterdam contracts have been extended to 2014 and 2015 respectively . With the Philadelphia engagement lasting until at least 2017, Nézet-Séguin will be one busy batonneur over the next decade or so.

The Philly critics have weighed in on the decision before the ink is even dry on the contract. See what Peter Dobrin and David Patrick Stearns have to say.

This is truly a stupendous achievement and one Miss Mussel hopes will finally put an end to the dreadful Canadian habit of bringing up Glenn Gould every 5 seconds. He hasn’t played a note in nearly 30 years, everyone. It’s time to move on.
