Rivas is a city of 28,000 in Nicaragua nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Nicaragua. Over the past 20 years, the bicycle charity Pedals for Progress has sent 20,000 bicycles to the town. The ease with residents can get around town has helped small businesses flourish and enabled people to travel further than they would ever have been able to before the bikes arrived.
