Ok – here’s all the #Operaplots we have on file. Please check to make sure all of yours are there. If we’ve identified the wrong opera, please do let us know but only if it is yours.
The list is sorted alphabetically by username, so it should be easy enough to find your bits of genius.
New commenters need to be approved, so don’t worry if yours doesn’t show up right away.
A corrected list will be available on Tuesday. Dig in!

The spectral trinity one wasn’t mine
@crazycomposawig
The second one currently listed for me is for Cardillac, not Un Ballo in Maschera.
Also, four are completely missing:
Boy returns from long personal crusade on Good Friday to shortly announce he’ll be kickin’ in the front pew. #operaplot
7 years and the best pick-up line he has this time is a free cruise for eternity, but dreamgirl finds sailor endlessly romantic. #operaplot
Lovestruck hunter ignores girlfriend for faustian pact to marry her and the day is saved by a sudden marriage of church and state #operaplot
New international agreement: crooks crooks crooks crooks crooks crooks have a kind of mystery and peace peace peace can be hell. #operaplot
Miss Mussel
AuthorGot them, thanks. Which opera is the “Boy returns from long personal crusade”?
@crazycomposawig
It’s Parsifal; thanks for running this great game, and sorry if I had messed anything up on getting the tweets in!
Miss Mussel
AuthorThat’s what I thought. Excellent. Don’t worry – you didn’t mess anything up. Glad you enjoyed yourself.
DrGeoduck
Two of my entries weren’t on the list. They were:
And what is “Il Castor” that Rodolfo is writing an article for? It’s a fanmag about Justin Biber. #OperaPlot #IncrediblyLamePun — http://twitter.com/#!/DrGeoduck/status/58916095331008512 (Opera: La boheme)
Sheriff goes gaga for Minnie’s pah-pah-pah-poker face. #OperaPlot #Groan
— http://twitter.com/#!/DrGeoduck/status/58998606400724993 (Opera: La fanciulla del West)
Three of my tweets were attributed to the wrong opera:
Who needs “Nessun Dorma” – Should be Busoni’s Turandot
There’s the guy. He dies in Venice. – Should be Death in Venice
CEILING SOPRANO IS WATCHING – Should be Don Carlo
And my two orphan tweets are…
Valkyrie, attempting to – Ghosts of Versailled
Einstein minus Glass/Wilson – Einstein (Paul Dessau)
Kyle
One of mine is missing!
News. Mao. Capitalists. Cheers. George Washington. Pigs. Jumbo the Elephant. The Book. Dancing. Burgers. Good work? #operaplot
Thanks for doing all this, it was fun!
Miss Mussel
AuthorIt’s been fun for me too. Mark your calendar for next year. Same bat time (thereabouts), same bat channel. I’m assuming this is Nixon in China. What is your Twitter name?
Kyle
Indeed it is Nixon! Sorry—@kyletieman.
Miss Mussel
AuthorGot it – thanks!
@tonysolitro
Thanks for including my tweets for #operaplot … just one minor correction: “I’d visit her in Tripoli more often…” is from Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin. Obscure, but one of my favorites.
Verbiagent
Hello, the “despondent widower” entry isn’t mine. Thanks for organizing this contest!
1and1make1 (M West)
My second one – “If you’re feeling a sense of foreshadowing…” was actually supposed to be Anna Karenina, but if you’ve seen one obscure opera you’ve seen ’em all, I suppose.
My haiku is missing: “Gotterdammerung/ Is too long for a haiku/ The name AND the plot #operaplot”
Thanks!
Sereisa
#operaplot he might be good with women, but certainly not with the dead. — THis is actually Don Giovanni.. :)
Thanks for the fun we had..
Miss Mussel
AuthorMy pleasure. Lovely to hear you had a good time.
Sally-Page Stuck
Wow. You’re good. I can’t see any mistakes.
Sarah
My “Coming up on Bravo…” is Le Comte Ory, not Les Huguenots.
“Swiss Maid” is of course La Sonnambula, and the “Self-referential etc..” is Capriccio.
Also, one of mine is missing:
Ten years later, Brett Dean’s elaborate excuse to make Peter Coleman-Wright grow a moustache finally pays off. #operaplot
Which is for Brett Dean’s opera Bliss.
Sarah
Oh, actually, another of mine is missing:
Fine, I don’t need to know who you are or where you’re from, but can we PLEEASE play the Lohengrin Bridal Chorus at our wedding? #operaplot
Lohengrin, obviously.
patty
You have my “Ah Telepods…” one listed three times.
Missing:
A burning bush & rules on stones, all sung in 12 row order tones. A golden calf, a cloud, some fire & love for God Moses’ desire. #operaplot
They cannot mask the love they have, but they will not succumb. His killer pardoned, he will die. It’s all so very glum. #operaplot
(I can’t imagine how you are keeping anything close to straight with all of this! What a chore!)
Miss Mussel
AuthorIt’s much easier this year now that I’ve discoved how to import a Twitter search automatically. Still it doesn’t index 100% accurately and there’s bound to be some cutting and pasting mistakes along the way.
Can you tell me which opera the last missing one belongs to?
patty
“They cannot mask” … masked ball …. :-)
Again, thanks for all your work!
patty
Oh … & my “Batter my heart” is Doctor Atomic rather than Nixon in China.
Rolf
Hi there! The
-“Where I said “Desdemona… etc” Is Schumann’s Genoveva, not Verdi’s Othello (as the plot of the later Verdi opera is in fact “the same” as Schumann’s opera.
-“Wich brother” is Verdi’s Trovatore
-“Live the Ramones… etc” is Glass, Einstein at the beach
Greetings from the Netherlands, Rolf
http://twitter.com/otterhouse
Rolf
PS,
-“No one really vanishes after live… etc ” is Michael van der Aa”‘s opera “After life!

Stuart Annels
Hey Miss Mussell!!! None of mine are!!!! It seems that you do not follow me (I thought you did!!!)
Miss Mussel
AuthorI don’t need to follow you to see anything tagged with #operaplot. Curious that none of yours showed up though. Are you a regular tweeter? (Sometimes Twitter is slow to index tweets by irregular or new users)
Stu
Oh, the answer to that is easy, I just did not realise it till you sent out the lists. I have a locked account, and you do not follow me (I thought you did!)
Miss Mussel
AuthorAh I see. Well even if I did follow you, I wouldn’t have seen them all. There’s just too much going on. I took the list straight from what Twitter indexed in their #operaplot search string.
Next year, you might consider unlocking your account for the duration. It’s more fun anyway….you can talk to loads of other opera nerds!
stu
I have reasons why I do not want my twitter feed to end up as the first thing people see when they search for me.. hence locked account…
(must create more hits for my name…)
Miss Mussel
AuthorFair enough – it’s up to you for sure how you want to manage your feed. Just wanted you know for next year.
Stuart Annels
I have sent my list via email to the address listed under contact…. Thanks!!!
David Coronel
Four of mine have slipped through the net (although you may have disqualified one of them :p), which are:
http://twitter.com/#!/King_Ouf_I/status/57914339969081344
Elina + Elixir = Eugenia / Ekaterina / Elain / Emilia. Emilia + Ennui = Extinction #operaplot (Janacek – The Makropoulos Case)
http://twitter.com/#!/King_Ouf_I/status/58559585501454336
London lowlives behaving badly – at least it’s dirt cheap #operaplot (Weill Der Dreigroschenoper)
http://twitter.com/#!/King_Ouf_I/status/58846302464774144
Beloved, fancy a drink? Let’s wander down to the village pub. Actually, I can think of a better way to drown our sorrows… #operaplot (Delius A Village Romeo and Juliet)
http://twitter.com/#!/King_Ouf_I/status/59005223200501760
Ah, peaceful! WHOA bass drum! WOW trumpets! Tunes! WHOOSH double fugue! Mmm flutes! WHAM another fugue! Calm ending. Not quite an #operaplot (Verdi Requiem – well, they say it’s ALMOST an opera!)
It’s been great fun again this year – I’m humbled to be in the cyberpresence of so many clever and witty people!
Miss Mussel
AuthorGlad you enjoyed yourself. Stayed tuned for Operaplot 2012 – Olympic Edition…..or at least an edition happening in the same year as the Olympics.
I did leave the Requiem out btw. Great summary, great piece, but not an opera.
Matt
This one:
“Much as I love my boyfriend”, thinks girl, “I reckon my sister’s would look cute with a mustache”. Sister feels the same way. #operaplot
Should be Cosi fan tutte… the fact it wasn’t recognised is more a reflexion on me than you!
Despina
OMG, THAT’S A GR8 PLOT!! DID U KNOW THE ALBANIANS HAVE 27 WORDS 4 MUSTACHE? http://www.shavingstuff.com/archives/tingo.php AND IPADS FREE OPERA DUDAMEL SCALA
ÄGYPTISCHE
David Coronel
Oh – forgot to say – one of mine that IS in the list is misattributed. ‘Happiness or bust? Bust’ was meant to be Turnage ‘Anna Nicole’
R.J. van Amstel
Very nice list, thanks for all the effort. A huge list of opera’s or operatic works.
I’m wondering now: which opera’s are not mentioned in this list?
Miss Mussel
AuthorYou’re welcome. I am always amazed each year at how many operas are mentioned. Some people are intentionally obscure but most just bring a bunch of operas they really love. The canon is huge!
Jane Dudley
Hello, two of mine are there. There are three more (posted the 15th, before midnight, EDT):
http://twitter.com/#!/janedudley/status/59060654266523648
One brother a fighter and would-be lover, one a singer who must fight, and a woman avenges her mom by inducing fratricide. #operaplot
http://twitter.com/#!/janedudley/status/59061738938699776
Madame Mao has us all scared @#%-less. Quick, back on the plane! Was it all worth it? #operaplot
and
http://twitter.com/#!/janedudley/status/59062702223540224
Bad baron beaten by Tiber-diving diva. #operaplot
Miss Mussel
AuthorHi – can you tell to which operas the first and third ones belong?
Jane Dudley
Yes – the first is Il Trovatore, and the third is Tosca.
Matt
I also posted this one:
https://twitter.com/#!/mngreenall/status/57814793914036224
SF from good family WLTM questing flautist for watersports and perhaps more. Must be prepared to cope with testy in-laws. #operaplot
Yvonne
Three of mine are missing:
Son abandoned after patricidal prediction, kills father anyway AND marries his mother. That kind of thing will turn you blind. #operaplot
Oedipus Rex
She’s a heartbreaker, he’s a deserter, the other one’s on PETA’s list. Why weren’t they checking for knives at stage door? #operaplot
Carmen
Lively maid betrothed to village idiot :( But marriage bargain turns out ok in G&S-style birth switch :) Exit pursued by a bear. #operaplot
The Bartered Bride
colla_voce
A couple of mine are mis-attributed:
“Twelve years…” was intended as a wry comment on Siegfried
The one marked “Henry VIII” is Maxwell Davies’s Taverner
The one marked Don Pasquale was meant to be ‘Rita’ – but works either way!
Thanks!
Miss Mussel
AuthorMy guesses for the first two were the results of two google searches gone wrong. It seems you can type in any subject or combination of characters and there is at least one opera written about it.
johnpitcher
Two of mine are missing, both for Samson:
#operaplot When the walls came tumbling down, everybody ran as they screamed at the sound. Dog-gone Dagons gone
Beautiful girl lovely dress/Temple smiles Oyes/Where she is now we can only guess/Cause it’s GonedaddyGone/Thelove is Dagon away#operaplot
This was misassigned to Johngilks
Dutchman: A spectral trinity of father, daughter and unholy ghost tell a stormy seaside tale of love, madness, and cliff diving #operaplot
Orphans
Carmen – Liberté, égalité, bovinité #operaplot
Pelleas et Melisande: We promise to sing some
Thanks
Verbiagent
Oops — and one of mine is missing:
#operaplot Lovelorn soldier goes insane with jealousy and kills the object of his affection. He lacks Carmen sense.
writeblack
For mine:
“Terrorists completely ruin…” = The Death of Klinghoffer
“A rabid anticommunist…” = Nixon in China
“I’m supposed to marry…” = Tristan und Isolde
gefiltejoe
My last post on the list, which currently does not have a title next to it, is for Akhnaten (Glass).
https://twitter.com/#!/gefiltejoe/status/58643860468940800

THE COUNT LUVS THE SINGLE LADIES – EVEN AFTER THEY MARRY – SO HE PUTS A RING ON IT. WHOOPS, THAT’S HIS WIFE!! WOH, OH, OH!!!
It’s The Nozze of Figaro
altojane
It was supposed to be Aida not Rigoletto but I guess that just means it wasn’t a very good effort on my part if the opera wasn’t identifiable!
Miss Mussel
AuthorDon’t worry about it — what seems obvious to one person about an opera often isn’t to another.
Sheila Heady
I wrote the “So he stabs her and leaves the Countess dying too! …and then I found five dollars.” one thinking about Lulu but it’s pretty hilarious that it also works as an “All of Opera” entry!
quasi mezzo
Miss Mussel,
A few of mine were left out, I think:
soprano, mezzo fall for castrato, other soprano falls for mezzo, tenor gets jealous. and a magic urn is involved. typical baroque #operaplot (Handel, Alcina)
@ alidoro- gave R sparkly bracelet, sent him on grand quest for match. he better search fast, sisters & ashes now giving me hives #operaplot (Rossini, Cenerentola)
countryside/Giovanni chased le donne/Giovanni thought ‘twas all good fun/Pop! goes the Commendatore! #operaplot
Many thanks!
@domb_opera
Couple that got posted last week but didn’t make the list…
King’s bid for parent of the year fails after marrying son’s beloved, asking permission to kill him & getting the kid’s BF shot #operaplot
When cholera breaks out at the beach you need to stop cruising and leave #operaplot
Gianna Wichelow
@giannawichelow says:
I also tweeted:
Sly, small, foxy nature girl: captured? Escapes? Meets hot, foxy guy? The circle of life? Check! Check! Check! Check! #operaplot
ckp1970
Better late than never? Been unconnected so missed that some of mine are orphans. Here are details.
“When flying fish sing” = Die Frau ohne Schatten
“Brother can you spare….” = Betrothal in a Monastery
“A god. A handsome boy….” = Apollo et Hyacinthus (Widl/Mozart). Okay really more an intermedio than an opera; sorry!
Anon
Will you be publishing the complete (updated) list of submissions for 2011? It’s fun to see them all at once. And – I know I’m being ever so picky – is there a way to make the list easier to read? Thanks! I know you’ve got your hands full.
Miss Mussel
AuthorYes for sure. I had hoped to get it done yesterday but alas. Hopefully over the next couple of days.
