In dulci jubilo by Michael Praetorius from A Year at Exeter Cathedral
Should the smoothness of the refined sound of a cathedral not really be your thing, look no further that this little bit of fantastic from Mike Oldfield c. 1975.
He keeps the dance rhythm and the small threat of anarchy that seems more true to the original spirit of the tune, first printed in 1305 and set by Buxtehude, Bach and Liszt, among others. Plus – CRUMHORN! or is it a shawm? The exact details of my medieval history class, in loose acquaintance even at the time, are now essentially irretrievable without significant supplementary reading.
